Down Hurlers To Play At Pairc Esler

Posted on Tuesday, May 08, 2012 at 00:00 AM
This Saturday will see Down Hurlers play in Pairc Esler, Newry, which is a rare event.   Down will face Meath in the  Round 2a match in the Christy Ring Cup. The Cup is named after Christy Ring from Cork who is regarded as one of the best hurlers of all time.  This year is the eighth year of the Christy Ring Cup, which is an Inter-County Hurling Tournament for second tier teams.
Eight teams will compete this year: Derry, Down, Kerry, Kildare, Mayo, Meath, Wicklow and London.  Both Armagh and Mayo failed to win any of their games last season but without a play-off, Armagh were relegated to play in the Nicky Rackard Cup in 2012.
Down beat Mayo in the opening rounds 19 points to 17 points.  Meath beat London in their opening game 4-8 to 3-10.
This Down Hurlers team home ground is McKenna Park in Ballycran which has a capacity of 5,000.  This is a rare opportunity for Newry locals and visitors to watch a Christy Ring Cup match on their front doorsteps.
