Liz Kimmins, Sinn Féin Councillor for Newry, has congratulated Newry, Mourne and Down Councillors last night after they formally rejected plans to build a 25ft wide bridge over Lindsay Hill.
Speaking following the decision, Kimmins said that the concerns of residents had been respected, and Councillors had recognised the rich history and heritage of the Lindsay Hill area:
“I am delighted that this disruptive bridge project has been formally rejected by Newry, Mourne and Down Councillors.
“For many months I have been meeting with residents alongside other Sinn Féin Councillors to listen to the case for protecting the vibrant history and heritage of the Lindsay Hill site.
“The decision by the Council Planning Committee reflects the concerns of residents who have been vocal in highlighting the problems this bridge project would impose on their homes.

“We will continue to engage with Lindsay Hill residents, and support the many initiatives taken by citizens to promote the important history of their area.”

Sinn Féin Councillor Liz Kimmins has urged the Housing Executive and Transport NI to take action regarding on-going safety concerns in the Barcroft area.

Speaking following meetings with NIHE and Transport NI, Kimmins said she stressed the importance of providing safe access to parking areas on 5th Street, and repairs for a crumbling wall on the same road which has been causing concern amongst residents.
Cllr Kimmins said:
“For a number of years now I have been lobbying for wall repairs and safe access to parking facilities for elderly and disabled residents of 5th Street in Barcroft.
“After meeting both the Housing Executive and Transport NI, I was assured that these projects have been earmarked for completion and made a priority.
“It must be stressed again to the relevant authorities that these issues are of major concern to residents, who have been restricted, and in some cases injured, as a result of lack of safe access to facilities they need.
“No risks can be taken when it comes to public safety, it’s time the Housing Executive and Transport NI invested in safety in the Barcroft area.”

Sinn Féin MP Micky Brady has called for the planned introduction of the controversial Universal Credit system to be postponed.
The Newry and Armagh MP said:
"Tory plans to introduce the Universal Credit system in September have created considerable concern, particularly around the processing of payments.
"The unacceptable delay of, on average, up to 6 weeks in administering the first payment has the potential to cause severe hardship during the most financially challenging months of the year.
"The Universal Credit advance, if granted, will not meet the costs of winter fuel, Christmas, housing and rising living costs.
"This delay in payment could drive people further into poverty, lead to evictions/arrears and debt.
"The seven Sinn Féin MPs have jointly written to Tory minister David Guake at the Department of Work and Pensions calling for the introduction of Universal Credit to be postponed, that the delay in administration of the first payment is reduced urgently, and that the payment process is more widely processed.

"The Universal Credit system is not fit for purpose and I am urging the department to take time to resolve the well documented difficulties experienced by many claimants in Britain."
