Sinn Fein committed to equality for travellers

Sinn Féin MLA Seán Lynch said the party is committed to delivering equality for all citizens.

The party's equality spokesperson was commenting after the latest report from the Council of Europe found that Irish Travellers are still face discrimination.

Seán Lynch said:
“Recently the Dáil adopted a report by the Justice and Equality Committee chaired by Caoimhghín Ó Caoláin to formally recognise Irish Travellers as an indigenous ethnic minority.

“Irish Travellers still face discrimination in the North in respect of accommodation.

“A multi-agency Taskforce on Traveller accommodation in the North needs to be set up to cater for the needs of Irish Travellers.

"Sinn Féin has called for the establishment of a national forum, across the island of Ireland, involving Travellers and the settled community, including representatives of all political parties, of government, local authorities, health and education sectors and representatives of media organisations to plan a way forward.

“Sinn Féin stood in the election on the platform of equality and respect for all and we will use our increased mandate to deliver for all citizens.”
