Shane ONeills club notes

 The Qube

What a fantastic weekend at the club with the The Qube, in conjunction with The Fight On Campaign for Séanín, on Saturday proving to be a brilliant night.

A total of thirty-six contestants put themselves forward to take on The Qube and after a total of six heats and two semi-finals, five people were left standing – Aaron Clements, Mary Toner, Gemma McKeown, Yasmin Mackin and Ann McLoughlin. With a prize of £1500 on offer all the finalists battled it out and gave their all to claim the money and after a tense final round it was Mary Toner who triumphed and picked up the winnings. Following the completion of The Qube the crowd danced away to the early hours.

The club would like to thank everyone who helped to make the whole range of events from Thursday to Sunday a huge success for the club – the organisers, the bar staff, the waiter service, the stewards, the burger makers, the ticket collectors – some of whom were there from morning to night over the past few days. Special thanks must go to all The Qube competitors for taking part and their fundraising efforts and to everyone who kindly sponsored them and to Pat McGinn who was excellent compere on Saturday night. Thanks also to everyone who sponsored the event in any capacity, your continuing support is greatly appreciated and to the Rooney, O’Malley, Maguire dance troupe who put on a brilliant display during The Qube. The club would also like to thank Dromintee GFC for their hard work, assistance and guidance on Saturday, without them the event would not have been possible, and if anyone else is considering hosting The Qube then Dromintee GFC are ones to help you run your event.

Senior Men

Our senior men were in championship action on Sunday evening against Mullagbawn in Cullyhanna but they fell to a three point defeat, 1 – 11 to 0 -11.

The sides swapped points earlier on with Paul O’Rourke on target for the Shanes before a pointed free from Kristian Magill put his side in front. Mullaghbawn then hit four points on the trot, two from frees, to give them a three point advantage but three in a row from the Shanes had the Camlough side back on level terms. The first of these scores came from a free by Mark McCabe before a great solo effort from Sean McLoughlin got the Shanes back within one, with Mark McCabe levelling things minutes later. Mullaghbawn edged ahead again soon after before another Kristian Magill free had the sides level at half-time at six points apiece.

The Shanes made a decent start to the second period with two pointed frees from the boot of Sean McLoughlin with Mullaghbawn replying with their seventh point of the game to leave just one between them. A third free of the half from Sean McLoughlin put the Shanes two ahead again before Paul O’Rourke tagged on another point to put his side three points to the good. Two points from Mullaghbawn got them back to within one once more and the edged ahead soon after following the conversion of a penalty kick. They followed up their goal with a well taken point to lead by three with Sean McLoughlin replying for the Shanes with pointed 45 but Mullaghbawn pointed again late on to seal the win, 1- 11 to 0 – 11.

Senior Ladies

Our senior ladies are continuing to prepare for the final of the championship against Sarsfields next Sunday 28th August in the Athletic Grounds. The club is running a bus on the day for all supporters, especially for all our underage girls and boys teams, accompanied by adult mentors. The bus costs £5 per person and will leave from Shanes at 12.30pm. Seats can be booked through any underage team manager or by calling 07876453546.

Minor Boys

Well done to our minor boys who clinched the Division 1B league title last Monday night with narrow one point win over Killeavy, 1 – 9 to 1 – 8.

The sides swapped points in the opening minutes with Matthew Girvan on target for the Shanes before points from Ciaran Mackin and Girvan again edged their side two in front. Another point apiece from the teams, Padraig Magee scoring this time, kept the Shanes ahead but Killeavy hit the next two points to level the tie and they went ahead for the first time soon after with a well taken goal. However their lead was short-lived as Ronan Byrne found himself on the end of a sweeping Shanes move and he coolly dispatched the ball to the back of the Killeavy net. A late first-half point from Killeavy saw them lead by one at the break, 1 – 5 to 1 – 4.

A Ronan Byrne point had the Shanes back on level terms early in the second-half and two quick-fire points from Matthew Girvan put the Shanes a couple ahead once more. Killeavy reduced the lead to just one minutes later but two points in row from the Shanes, one each from Ronan Byrne and Matthew Girvan, saw the Camlough side lead by three with less than ten minutes to go. Killeavy were now attacking in waves but the Shanes defence, who were superb throughout, stood strong against the Killeavy onslaught and only conceded a further two points to ensure that the Shanes held on to claim the win, 1 – 9 to 1 – 8.

U16 Girls

The U16 girls have a league game away to Armagh Harps on Monday, 22nd August at 7.00pm. All girls are asked to meet at the club at 5.45pm.

U14 Girls

Our U14 girls were in championship final action on Sunday afternoon against Granemore in Mullabrack on Sunday. The young Shanes girls have been playing great football throughout the year but unfortunately on Sunday they were beaten by a better team on the day. Despite the loss the young Shanes and their managers have worked hard throughout the season and can take credit for all their efforts – well done everyone.

U10s
Last Wednesday evening saw our U10 host Whitecross and full credit must go to all the players who took part and put in a great performance.
U10 training continues every Tuesday and Friday from 6.00pm – 7.00pm and all new members are welcome.

U8s
On Saturday our U8s took part in the KBRT day in Silverbridge. A good day was had by all the players involved, and in some terrible weather conditions, every player enjoyed every game they took part in.

U8 training continues every Tuesday and Friday from 6.00pm – 7.00pm and all new members are welcome.

Well Done

Well done to all our younger members who received their exam results during the week.
