 Senior Men

Our senior men made a disappointing exit from the championship on Sunday, losing by two points to Silverbridge in a low scoring encounter in Cullyhanna, 0 – 8 to 0 – 6.

The Shanes played into a gale force wind in the opening half and despite have a number of decent chances they failed to score, shooting a total of nine wides over the thirty minutes. However, they did restrict their opponents to just four points, two from frees, and went in ay half-time confident they could overhaul the deficit in the second-half.

With the wind at their backs the Shanes made a great start to the second period and within ten minutes they were back on level terms thanks to points from Greg McCabe, Sean McLoughlin, Connaire Mackin and Paul O’Rourke. Two points in a row from Silverbridge edged them ahead again before another Greg McCabe point got the Shanes back to within one. The sides then swapped points with Sean McLoughlin pointing another free for the Shanes to leave just the minimum between them but Silverbridge finished the stronger side and added another point to claim the win by two, 0 – 8 to 0 – 6.

The senior men now have one league game left at home to Middletown with a date still to be confirmed.

Minor Boys

Despite a brilliant second-half performance from our minor boys last Monday night they lost by two points to Dromintee in the final of the Division 1 shield final, 2 – 8 to 1 – 9.

The Shanes lads made a terrible start to the game and found themselves 2 – 2 to no score after fifteen before Matthew Girvan pointed a free for his side. Dromintee fired over the next three points to lead by ten points before an Oisin O’Callaghan penalty reduced the deficit to seven before the same player scored a great point to leave his side six in arrears at the break, 2 – 5 to 1- 2.

An early Ciaron McMullan point gave the Shanes a good start to the second-half but it was quickly cancelled out by Dromintee’s sixth point of the game. Three points in a row from the Shanes, two from Matthew Girvan and one from Eamon McCabe, got the Camlough side back to within three with Dromintee replying with another point.  The Shanes responded in great fashion with two points from Oisin O’Callaghan and Matthew Girvan to leave just two between them but Dromintee increased their advantage to three with another point. With less than five minutes on the clock the Shanes went all out to get the equalising score and went close on a couple of occasions with Michael McParland fizzing a shot just wide of the far post before the Dromintee keeper made an excellent save to deny Matthew Girvan. Despite a late point from a 45 from Damian O’Hagan the Shanes just couldn’t back on level terms and Dromintee held on to claim the win by 2 – 8 to 1 – 9.

Despite the disappointment of Monday the minors have had a decent season, winning the Division 1 B league title and being competitive right throughout the year. Well done to all the lads and their management team for their hard work and commitment over the season.

Senior Ladies

Our senior ladies are through to the Ulster Intermediate semi-final following a comprehensive 5 – 15 to 1 – 11 win over Donegal champions Carndonagh on Sunday.

The side’s swapped points in the opening exchanges with Aimee Mackin getting the Shanes score before she hit four points in a row to give her side an early advantage. Moya  Feehan then fired over a great long range point to increase the lead before Blaithin Mackin picked the ball up in midfield before powering forward to dispatch the brilliantly to the net to give her side a nine point advantage. Moya Feehan then pounced on a poor kick-out to fire the ball back over the bar to keep the Shanes well in control.  Carndonagh registered their second point of the game soon after but this was quickly cancelled out by another point from Aimee Mackin. The sides then swapped two frees apiece with Aimee Mackin getting both the Shanes scores  and with half-time fast approaching recorded another two points to leave the Shanes firmly on top at the break, 1 – 12 to 0 – 4.

Carndonagh were first on the scoreboard in the second-half with a pointed free with Aimee Mackin replying for the Shanes, also from a placed ball. Another free for Carndonagh saw them register their sixth point of the contest before Shauna Grey played a pinpoint ball to Aimee Mackin who took on her marker before firing the ball to net for the Shanes second goal of the game. A seventh point kept the scoreboard ticking over for Carndonagh but two goals in as many minutes from Aimee Mackin all but sealed the win for the Shanes. To their credit Carndonagh kept plugging away and they scored a quick fire goal and a point before Aoife McCoy scored a fine individual point, leaving the Carndonagh defence in her wake before firing over. Minutes later Aoibheann Jones was upended in the square and Aimee Mackin confidently dispatched the resulting penalty to the net. A ninth Carndonagh point was quickly cancelled out by an Aimee Mackin free before Carndonagh got the last two points of the game to leave the final score 5 – 15 to 1 – 11 in favour of the Shanes.

All in all this was a great performance from the entire Shanes team with the goalkeeper and the defensive unit solid throughout whilst the midfield and attackers were dominant over the 60 minutes.

Next up for the senior ladies is a home semi-final on Sunday 16th October against Truagh from County Monaghan.

U10s

Saturday saw our U10s take part in the annual Dromintee blitz. Following some good performances against tough opposition in the form of Cullyhanna, Forkhill, Dromintee and Silverbridge the young Shanes finished in joint 3rd position. Unfortunately they lost out in a place in the cup quarter-final due to point’s difference. The management would like to thanks all parents and kids for their efforts this season.

Training for the U10s will now take place on Thursday evening in St Paul’s school from 7.00pm – 8.00pm.

U8s

Saturday saw our U8 footballers finish off the season by travelling to the Newry Shamrocks tournament.  After three group games against Burren, Tullylish and Shamrocks the Shanes youngsters progressed to the shield semi-final and Mayobridge were the opponents. This proved to be a tough game for the boys and girls and some brilliant scores were exchanged by both teams in what was a tight game, but the young Shanes dug deep and won by a couple of points to win a place in the final. Saval were the opposition in the final and the Shanes got off to a brilliant start with an early goal. Saval replied with a couple of well taken points but the Shanes youngsters remained relaxed and continued to enjoy themselves whilst playing some wonderful football. At the final whistle our young boys and girls got what they really deserved and won the final by a few points. This was a great way to finish off the season and it was great for the kids to be rewarded for all their hard work throughout the year.

Training for U8 boys and girls now takes place on Thursday evening from 6.00pm – 7.00pm in St Paul’s school.

U6s

Training for U6s continues every Wednesday evening at 6.00pm in Bessbrook Community Centre. All boys and girls at this age group are welcome to attend.

Senior Ladies

Our senior ladies are through to the Ulster Intermediate Championship final following a very hard fought win over Monaghan champions Truagh on a score-line of 6 – 5 to 1 – 11.

Playing against a strong wind in the first-half the Shane’s got off to a dream start with Aoife McCoy netting in the opening minute before a long range effort from Shauna Grey crept over the keeper’s head and into the net and the Shane’s found themselves six to the good. Aimee Mackin tagged on another point before Truagh registered their first point of the contest but this was quickly cancelled out by another Mackin point. The Shanes led by seven at this stage but Truagh hit the next four points to leave just three between them but great work from Aoife McCoy found Aimee Mackin in space in front of goal and she made no mistake from close range. The same player was on target minutes later with another well taken point and to restore her side’s seven point advantage. Truagh then hit a bit of purple patch, scoring 1 – 3 without reply to get themselves right back into the game and, but for an excellent save from Shane’s keeper Katie Daly the Monaghan girls could have gone in at half-time in front. However it was the Shane’s who went into the half-time interval with a narrow one point lead, 3 – 3 to 1 – 8.

Just like the first-half the Shane’s made an excellent start to the second when Moya Feehan was on the end of a flowing move to stylishly finish the ball to the Truagh net and increase her side’s advantage. A further two points from the boot of Aimee Mackin kept the scoreboard ticking over for the Shane’s but Truagh kept themselves well in the hunt with their ninth point of the contest to leave just five between them. A period of sustained Shane’s pressure ended with Aoibheann Jones dispatching the ball low into the Truagh net to all but seal the win for the Camlough side. To their credit Truagh didn’t drop their heads and they scored the next two points but with almost the last kick of the game a Blaithin Mackin shot made its way to the Truagh net to leave the final score 6 -5 to 1 – 11 in favour of the Shane’s.

This was a game in which the Shane’s had to dig deep and grind out a result against a very good Truagh side but credit to all the girls who played with great heart and determination to set up an Ulster Final tie against Fermanagh side Kinawley. The game is scheduled to take place on Sunday 30th October but the venue is still unknown.

U21s

Our U21s began the defence of their Intermediate Championship title with an emphatic 3 – 18 to 1 – 4 win over Sarsfields in Camlough on Sunday afternoon.

The Shanes went in front early on thanks to points from Mark McCabe and Ryan Quinn before McCabe set up Matthew Girvan for the opening goal of the contest. The sides then swapped two points each with Mark McCabe on target both times for the Shanes and the same player added a further two frees before the half-time break to see his side leading by seven at the break, 1 – 6 to 0 – 2.

The Shanes all but finished the game off in the opening ten minutes of the second-half, tagging on a further six points in row to leave them thirteen points to the good with the scores coming from Mark McCabe (0 – 4), Ryan Quinn (0 – 1) and Matthew Girvan (0 – 1). Sarsfields then scored their first point of the second-half only for Ryan Quinn and Damian O’Hagan fire over great points for the Shanes before Mark McCabe hit a quick-fire goal and a point to increase the Shanes advantage. To their credit Sarsfields kept plugging away and they were rewarded with a goal and a point of their own but the Shanes finished the game the much stronger side and scored a further 1 – 3 to claim a well-deserved win, the scores coming from Mark McCabe (1 – 0), Matthew Girvan (0 – 2) and Michael McParland (0 – 1).

Senior Ladies – Ulster Champions

Our senior ladies were crowned Ulster intermediate champions on Sunday following an extremely hard fought over Fermanagh champions Kinawley, on a score-line of 8 – 7 to 6 – 9, in front of a huge crowd in Wolfe Tones, Derrymacash.

The Shanes got off to a terrible start and with less than ten minutes on the clock they found themselves 2 - 2 to 0 - 0 down and struggling to find their rhythm. However an Aoibheann Jones point get them off the mark and the same player was on target minutes with her side’s first goal to the half the early deficit. An Aimee Mackin free had the Shanes back to within three before Blaithin Mackin weaved her way through the Kinawley defence and placed the ball in the bottom corner to bring the sides level. Kinawley edged in front minutes later with their third point only for Aoife McCoy to reply almost immediately for the Shanes before an Aimee Mackin point put her side in front for the first time in the game. Kinawley were back on level terms minutes later but the impressive Aoibheann Jones restored the Shanes lead soon after when she found herself in space in front of the Kinawley goal and she made no mistake, planting the ball in the net and giving her side a three point advantage. Kinawley were almost level again in their next attack but Katie Daly made a great save in the Shanes goal to flick the goal bound effort over the bar to leave just two between them. Great work from Aoibheann Jones found Aimee Mackin within striking distance of the Kinawley goal and she dispatched the ball to net for her side’s fourth goal of the half and Aoife McCoy rounded off the first-half with a well taken point and give the Shanes a six point advantage at the break, 4 – 5 to 2 – 5.

The sides swapped points in the opening exchanges of the second-half with Blaithin Mackin on target for the Shanes. The Shanes then opened up nine point lead when Aoibheann Jones notched up her hat-trick but Kinawley replied almost immediately with their third goal of the game to get themselves back to within six. The Shanes lead was almost reduced to just three soon after but Katie Daly made another great brilliant save to keep Kinawley at bay and the Shanes took full advantage when player of the match Shauna Grey scored a great individual goal and give her side a nine point advantage once more. Kinawley reduced the deficit to eight with a well taken point but Kirsty Murphy pointed for the Shanes minutes later to keep her side well in front but Kinawley were by no means out of the game and two goals in as minutes from the Fermanagh side had them back to within three points. The game was right back in the melting point at this stage but Aimee Mackin eased the Shanes nerves when her low shot found the Kinawley net and the Shanes were six points to the good heading into the final ten minutes. Two Kinawley points kept them right in the hunt and just four in arrears before Aimee Mackin pounced on a defensive mistake to score her side’s eighth and final goal of the contest and give her team a seven point advantage. The game was now in injury time but Kinawley didn’t give up and they recorded another late goal but it wasn’t enough as the Shanes held on the claim the Ulster intermediate title by four points, 8 – 7 to 6 – 9.

Having dispatched Carndonagh and Truagh in the earlier rounds, the Shanes ladies came up against a very tough opponent in Kinawley on Sunday but if nothing else this side has great heart and spirit running through it and they needed every ounce of it to get over the line on Sunday. Senior Ladies – All-Ireland Semi-Final

Next Sunday, 20th November our senior ladies host Parnell’s of London in the All-Ireland Intermediate Club Championship semi-final.

Having recently added the Ulster title to their Armagh crown, this young Shanes team face a formidable test as they strive for an unprecedented treble.

With Parnell’s having already won the Intermediate All-Ireland title only four years ago there's no doubting their quality and experience. However, the Shanes senior ladies are definitely a team on the rise and possess huge levels of heart and spirit to add to their undeniable skill and style.

All of us associated with the club extend our best wishes to the players and management and urge everyone from our club, community and further afield to get to the Shanes next Sunday to give these young ladies the support they deserve.  Please note that the game throws-in at 12.30pm.

U21s

Despite leading by seven points at one stage our U21s fell to a disappointing one point defeat to Craobh Ciaran in Middletown on Sunday, 0 – 12 to 0 – 11.

Both sides swapped early frees with Mark McCabe on target for the Shanes before the Camlough side went on to score seven on points in a row with Mark McCabe (0 – 5, 3 frees), Ryan Quinn (0 – 1) and Greg McCabe(0 – 1) getting the scores. Two points direct from 45’s saw Craobh Ciaran go in at the half-time five in arrears.

Craobh Ciaran began the second-half where they left off in the first and scored they themselves scored seven points on the trot, two from frees, to lead by two, 0 – 10 to 0 – 8. A free from Mark McCabe had the Shanes back to within one before Greg McCabe levelled things up at ten points each. A free from Craobh Ciaran edged them in front again before Greg McCabe pointed a 45 to tie the teams once more but another late free from Craobh Ciaran saw them claim the win by one, 0 – 12 to 0 – 11.

The final outcome of the group is still unknown as there is still at least one group still be played.

U10s

Training for the U10s continues this Thursday evening in St Paul’s school from 7.00pm – 8.00pm.

U8s

Training for the U8s continues this Thursday evening in St Paul’s school from 6.00pm – 7.00pm.

Shane's Senior Ladies into All-Ireland Final

A fantastic performance from our senior ladies saw they beat Parnell’s of London by three points on Sunday, 3 – 7 to 1 – 10, and in doing so making it through to an historic All-Ireland final.

The pitch was shrouded in thick fog in the lead up to throw-in time but it burnt off sufficiently to allow the game go ahead and what a game it was for the large crowd in attendance. The Shane's hit the front in the opening minute when Aoife McCoy was upended in the square and Aimee Mackin stepped up to take the resulting penalty and great save from the Parnell’s keeper forced the goal bound effort over the bar. An Aimee Mackin free edged the Shane's further ahead and the same player scored a brilliant point from play minutes later to give her side a 0 – 3 to 0 – 0 lead.  Two points in a row, one from a free, from Parnell’s had them one arrears but a great individual point from Shauna Grey put the Shane's two up again. A further pointed free from Parnell’s kept them one in arrears before the sides swapped points with Aimee Mackin on target again for the Shane's to keep her side narrowly ahead. With half-time fast approaching Aimee Mackin fired over another point before a great ball from Blaithin Mackin found her sister Aimee in a bit space in front goal and she made no mistake, firing the ball to the Parnell’s net. This late flurry from the Shane’s saw them go into the half-time interval leading by five points, 1 – 6 to 0 – 4.

An early second-half free from Aimee Mackin stretched the Shane’s advantage to six before some great defending resulted in the Shane's powering forward and the ball found its way to Aimee Mackin who once made mistake, driving the ball low to the net. The Shane’s led by nine points at this stage but the contest was far from over as Parnell’s then hit a bit of a purple patch and began to dominate and they scored 1 – 5 without reply to trail by just one point. It really was backs to wall stuff now but the Shane’s defence, who were magnificent over the hour, stood firm and refused to let their opponents get back on level terms. Their breaking up of Parnell’s attacks was superb and one of these defensive efforts saw Shanua Grey turn over the ball which again made its way to Aimee Mackin and having beat her marker for pace she rifled the ball to the roof of the Parnell’s net and give her side an all-important four point advantage. Parnell’s fought hard to get themselves back into the game but again the Shane’s defence stood strong and restricted the London side to just one further point and at the final whistle the Shane’s had done enough to see them through to the All-Ireland final on a score-line of 3 – 7 to 1 – 10.

All roads now lead to Parnell Park on Sunday 4th December where the girls will take on Annaghdown from Galway in the All-Ireland Intermediate final.

Everyone at the club would like to congratulate all the girls and their management team on a tremendous achievement and really hope they go on and win the All-Ireland title.

U21s

It was a disappointing end to the season for our U21s losing out by one point to Granemore in the final of the Intermediate Championship, 2 – 9 to 2 – 8, on Saturday evening.

The Shanes got off to a flying start with Greg McCabe firing two great early points before Matthew Girvan went close for his side when his low shot flew inches past the post. Granemore then replied with the first point before a Mark McCabe free put the Shanes two ahead again. Another free, this time from Greg McCabe, stretched the Shanes advantage to three but two pointed frees from Granemore had them back to within one. The sides then swapped points with Matthew Girvan on target for the Camlough side and the same player was on the score-sheet minutes later when some great combination play between Michael McParland and Eamon McCabe put Girvan through on goal but his goal-bound effort was brilliantly tipped over the bar. Three pointed frees, two of which were extremely debateable, in closing minutes of the half saw Granemore go into the break one point to the good, 0 – 7 to 0 – 6.

It was a cagey opening to the second-half and there was almost eight minutes on the clock before Mark McCabe pointed the opening score to bring the Shanes level. Granemore restored their one point advantage soon after before two goals in less than five minutes saw them lead by seven. A rare Shanes free, which was pointed by Mark McCabe, left the Camlough side six in arrears before a great ball from Ryan Quinn saw Mark McCabe rise highest to flick the ball to the net and bring his side back to within three. With the game entering injury time the Shanes poured forward in search of the equalising score and when Oisin O’Callaghan was upended in the square Greg McCabe stepped up to coolly finish the resulting penalty to the Granemore net and tie the game at 2 – 8 apiece. However Granemore mounted one last attack and with virtually the last kick of the game they fired over the winning point because when the Shanes keeper took the resulting kick out the referee sounded the final whistle and with it the hopes of a second successive U21 title for the Shanes.

Everyone at the club would like to congratulate the efforts of all the lads over the past few months and the commitment and hard work of their management team, David Muckian, Mick Mackin and Peter O’Brien.

Senior Ladies

Now that the dust is beginning to settle on our All-Ireland adventure the club would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who helped to make it possible - to the clubs and businesses who provided the girls with training and injury recovery facilities, to the physios who were available at the drop of a hat, to the local media and photographers whose coverage of the girls was first class, to the individuals, clubs and businesses who sponsored a player and bought good luck signs, to the sponsors of food on numerous occasions, to the Hughes Family for the sponsorship of the All-Ireland strip, to the Carrickdale Hotel for their generosity on the day of the final, to Raymond Tumilty and the team in O'Neill's, to the many well-wishers on social media, from near and far, whose messages of support were greatly appreciated by everyone, to all the anonymous sponsors (you know who you are), to Armagh Ladies GAA and Ulster Ladies GAA, and to everyone else who contributed in any way at all - your support and generosity is deeply appreciated by all at the club. I have probably forgotten to include someone in this and if I have it is totally unintentional but please take this as a note of our deep gratitude.

As special word of thanks must go to the parents of all the players whose support and commitment throughout the year has been unbelievable and to all the supporters who attended all the games and made themselves loud and proud when cheering the girls on.

Finally on behalf of everyone associated with the club I would like to congratulate Peter Lynch, Caoibhe Sloan, their backroom team and the entire senior ladies panel of players for providing us with an unbelievable year....thanks for the memories.

Gaelic4Girls

Shane O Neill’s ladies are currently launching our latest Gaelic4Girls Programme.

G4G, as it's known, is for girls aged between 8 and 13 who would like to begin playing girl's football.
It doesn't matter if someone has never played before or only has a limited experience, as everyone who comes to G4G will be starting at the same point, learning the basic skills and more importantly making new friends and potential team mates, in a fun, friendly and safe environment.

The G4G programme begins next Saturday January 21st at 11.00am to 12.15pm in Shane O Neill’s and continues for 8 sessions. The cost is £10 per player with every player receiving a specially designed Shanes G4G training top and certificate on completion.

Water/juice/fruit and snacks are also provided after each session.

Most girls who have never played yet would probably not yet own football boots, so to allay the costs of new boots we will be able to supply boots in a range of sizes on day 1, along with a suitable football jersey.
Our senior ladies team management and players will be coaching and mentoring the group for the 8 sessions.
Visits to local schools in the Camlough, Bessbrook, Belleek and Whitecross areas took place over the past week and all girls in the age group will have the necessary information home with them.
Gaelic4Girls is a fantastic opportunity for young girls to become involved in such an enjoyable and rewarding sport and we look forward to seeing lots of new and enthusiastic faces on January 21st.
For any enquiries please contact Peter Lynch 07876453546 or Yasmin Mackin 07929933548. Or alternatively, you can contact us through the club Facebook page.
Gaelic4Girls has been very successful in the past, attracting many young footballers and we aim to make it another fun and exciting experience for all who attend.

The club would like to thank all the local schools for facilitating our visits over the past week to promote the Gaelic4Girls programme
