Shane O'Neill's Club Notes - 25th June 2017

 Senior Men

Our senior men recorded a hard fought one point home win over Keady on Friday evening, 1 – 8 to 1 – 7.

Following a cagey opening to the game Mark McCabe put the Shanes ahead with a well taken point with Keady replying minutes later with a pointed free. Two David McCabe points, both from frees, edged the Shanes ahead before a Paul O’Rourke point, again from a placed ball, gave the Shane’s a three-point advantage midway through the first-half. A Mark McCabe score stretched their lead to four before a Ryan Quinn ball found McCabe in space in front of goal and he made no mistake from close range and the Shane’s now led by seven. Keady responded with their second point of the half but it was quickly cancelled out when David McCabe fired over from long range. A late first-half free saw Keady register their third point and go into the break six in arrears, 1 – 6 to 0 – 3.

The Shane’s made a great start to the second period with substitute Eamon McCabe slotting over following a powerful run from the halfway line. The home side were now seven to the good and in total control but some sloppy play in the middle of the field saw Keady drive forward and following a foul in the small square they were awarded a penalty. The resulting kick was sent low to Conor McKeown’s right and Keady were now only four behind. This score lifted the away side and they scored the next four points, two from frees, to level the game. The Shane’s had a number of good scoring opportunities to make the game safe but failed to make the most of them and it took a late point from the boot of David McCabe to edge the home side in front again, a lead which they held until the final whistle and claim a narrow win, 1 – 8 to 1 – 7.

Early Sunday afternoon and the senior men were back in action away to Eire Óg and after another tough contest the game ended all square at 2 – 9 apiece.

The sides swapped points in the opening exchanges with Matthew Girvan on target for the Shane’s before Eire Óg got the next two scores with David McCabe replying for the Shane’s with a well taken point. The home side moved four in front when they registered their first goal of the game but four points on the trot saw the Shanes draw level with the McCabe brothers, David and Mark, getting two points each. A pointed free put Eire Óg back in front again but from the resulting kick-out the Shane’s flowed forward and the move ended with Matthew Girvan slotting the ball low to the Eire Óg net to put his side in front for the first time. With the game in first-half injury time David McCabe found the Eire Óg net again, getting on the end of a fisted pass from Mark McCabe. The Shane’s led by five at this stage but Eire Óg narrowed the gap to four with a late pointed first-half free.

It was a disastrous start to the second-half for the Shane’s when in the opening minute a high ball into the square was fumbled to the net and Eire Óg were back to within one. A Paul O’Rourke point edged the Shanes further ahead but Eire Óg hit a purple patch to score the next four points of the game and go into the lead with less than five minutes left on the clock. The Shane’s poured forward in an effort to get back into the game and Mark McCabe’s third point of the contest had them back to within one and with the game entering additional time Matthew Girvan popped the ball over to level things up. Both sides had late chances to claim the spoils but ultimately the game all square, 2 – 9 to 2 – 9.

Senior Ladies

Our senior ladies made the short trip to Carrickcruppen on Saturday evening and put in a mighty effort to claim a two-point win, 6 – 12 to 4 – 16.

The Shane’s ladies were slow out of the blocks in the opening ten minutes and found themselves 2- 3 to 0 – 0 in arrears. However, they settled into the game and scored six of the next seven scores to level the game and the sides went in all-square at half-time at 2 – 6 apiece but in truth the Shane’s should have been ahead on the scoreboard as a perfectly good Aimee Mackin point was signalled wide.

Two early second-half goals, one each from Sorcha McDonnell and Aimee Mackin, and a fine point from Aoibheann Jones to a single pointed free from Carrickcruppen gave the Shane’s a six-point lead. By the midway point of the half the Shanes led by seven points before four points on the trot gave them a seemingly unassailable eleven-point advantage but Cruppen fought back to get within two. The Shane’s girls defended like their lives depended on it in the final few minutes and their sheer hard-work and determination saw them over the line, 6 – 12 to 4 – 16.

Training for the senior and minor ladies continues this Tuesday evening at 7:00 pm before the senior ladies’ travel to Armagh Harps next Monday night at 7:30 pm.

Minor Boys

The minor boys were scheduled to play Grange on Monday night but the game has been postponed until Monday 7th August.

U16 Girls

Our U16 girls recorded a great win over Killeavy on Thursday evening in the league and they were back in championship action on Saturday afternoon away to Armagh Harps. Despite putting in a decent performance, the Shane’s lost out to the home side. The girls have an away game against Clann Eireann on Thursday evening and all girls are asked to meet at the club at 5:30 pm.

U14 Girls

It was disappointment for our U14 girls last Monday, losing out by two points to Armagh Harps in the championship. The Shane’s girls trailed by double figures going into the last ten minutes of the game but they mounted a tremendous comeback but unfortunately time ran out and they fell to a narrow defeat.

U12s

Saturday saw our U12 amalgamation of Patrick Rankins travel to Ballyholland to take part in their annual blitz and after a brilliant day’s football they won the Cup competition. The young footballers played some brilliant football right through the tournament and they saved one of their performances for the final itself where defeated their Warrenpoint opponents by a few scores. On top of winning the cup Caolan O’Hare was deservedly named as the Player of the Tournament. The club would like to thank Ballyholland for their invite and their hospitality on the day.

U12 Girls

Well done to our U12 girls who were at home to a very good Tír na nÓg side on Sunday morning. It was a great display of football from both sets of players and the Shane’s girls battled really hard from start to finish to go on and seal the win. Training continues on Tuesday evening from 7:00 pm – 8:00 pm with a game away to the amalgamated side of Silverbridge and Cullyhanna on Thursday evening with a throw-in time of 7:00 pm.

U10s

Training for our U10s this week will take place on Tuesday and Thursday evening this week from 6:00 pm – 7:00 pm at the field. Over the past week the U10s were in action away to Lisbrack on Wednesday evening before hosting Drumgath on Sunday morning. All the boys and girls put in a great effort in both games and really enjoyed themselves. Next up for the U10s is their annual home blitz next Saturday.

Underage Training

Please note that training for all our U6s, U8s, and U12s will take place every Friday night from 6:00 pm - 7:00 pm at the field. All boys and girls at these age groups are very welcome to come along.

Meabh O’Neill’s Camogie

The senior camogs have a busy week ahead with a home game against An Port Mor on Monday evening before returning to action on Wednesday evening with another home game against Killeavy, both games begin at 7:30 pm.  Underage camogie training continues on Wednesday evening from 6:00 pm – 7:30 pm before the U12s travel to An Port Mor next Saturday.

Annual U10 Blitz

Our annual U10 football blitz takes place next Saturday 1st July. With over 20 teams scheduled to take part it promises to be a great day’s football. Anyone interested in helping out on the day - refereeing, score-keeping, time-keeping etc - please contact Brendy Osborne. We would also ask that all the parents of our U10s prepare sandwiches etc for next Saturday.

Well Done

Well done to all our U6's who completed 3 laps of the new Community Walk-way, with a few obstacles along the way, for their sponsored walk last Wednesday evening. A total of £630 and €20 was raised by the youngest members of the club....well done everyone. A big word of thanks to everyone for their donations and help and a special mention to their coach Yasmin Mackin who has worked hard with the U6s all year.

Congratulations

Congratulations to our former senior footballer Raymond Fitzpatrick and his wife Catriona on the birth of the new baby boy, Louie Fitzpatrick.
