Shane O'Neill's Club Notes - 1st May 2017

Senior Men

Our senior men began their league campaign with a comprehensive thirteen point away win over Clonmore on Sunday afternoon, 5 – 11 to 3 - 4.
Playing against a strong wind the Shanes bossed the opening exchanges and went ahead thanks to a goal from Greg McCabe but they soon found themselves one in arrears thanks to a quick Clonmore goal and point. David McCabe restored the Shanes lead when he got on the end of a flick from Paddy Maughan to palm the ball to the net for his side’s second goal.

However, the lead was short-lived when a wind assisted line ball caught out the Shane’s keeper and found its way to the net to put Clonmore a point ahead. A fisted point from Paddy Maughan levelled game before Nathan Morgan broke the ball in the middle of the field which was picked up by Connaire Mackin and he cut through the Clonmore defence to rifle home the Shane’s third goal. Ryan Quinn followed up with a well taken point before a late pointed free from Clonmore saw the home side trail by three at the break, 3 – 2 to 2 – 2.

The Shane’s had the wind at their backs in the second-half and they made a great start with David McCabe scoring an early goal and point to put his side firmly in control. Connaire Mackin followed up with a superb point from a side-line ball before Paul O’Rourke popped over from close range. Another side-line ball from Mackin made its way over the bar to put the Shane’s ten to the good. Clonmore responded with a pointed free before a fantastic pinpoint ball from Connaire Mackin found Greg McCabe who needed no second invitation to drive at the Clonmore defence and plant the ball in the net. Clonmore slotted over another pointed free but the Shane’s replied with four points in a row with the scores coming from Paul O’Rourke, Ryan Quinn, Greg McCabe and David McCabe. Clonmore replied with a late consolation goal but the final score of the game went to the returning Neil Paul Lennon who confidently knocked over a close range free to leave the final score 5 – 11 to 3 – 4 in favour of the Shanes.

The senior men return to action on Friday evening with a home game against Middletown before travelling to St Pauls next Sunday.

Senior Ladies
It was a busy week for our senior ladies with two home games, the first against Grange on Tuesday evening and the second against Forkhill on Saturday. The girls went into Tuesday’s game on the back of two defeats but they were much more clinical against Grange and recorded a comfortable victory, 8 – 11 to 1 – 1. Grange opened the scoring on Tuesday evening with an early point but the Shanes scored 4 – 4 without reply before Grange scored a late first-half goal. The second-half was completed dominated by the Shanes, scoring a further 4 – 7 whilst keeping their opponents scoreless.
The senior ladies continued their good run of form with a comfortable win over Fork hill on Saturday night. The Shane’s hit the front early on and maintained a consistently high tempo throughout the game to keep a valiant Fork hill team at bay and secure another all-important two league points. The game was especially significant, in that we saw debuts for our recent additions to the panel, all the way from Brazil to South Armagh. Dhebora, Rayza, Jacqueline, Luany and Elenize all received a warm welcome from the Shane’s football family and we look forward to seeing them in the green jersey in the coming weeks.

Next up for the senior ladies is a home league game against Clan Eireann on Tuesday night at 7.15pm.

Minor Boys
Our minor boys’ amalgamation of Patrick Rankins recorded hard fought three-point win over Keady on Monday evening, 4 – 12 to 4 – 9. The Rankins trailed by two at the interval but a strong second-half performance saw them claim the win. No further league fixtures have been issued for the minor boys but they continue to train on Mondays and Thursday from 6.30pm – 7.45pm.

Minor Girls
Our minor girls had their second league outing on Thursday evening against Cullyhanna, with the game being played in Dorsey. With several players missing through injury and school commitments, the Shanes played with a strong wind in the first-half, dominating possession but failing to find the target as much as they should have, taking a seven-point lead into half-time. Despite playing against the wind in the second half, the girls played intelligent football, staying strong in defence while using the ball wisely to move forward and pick off major scores to finish well ahead at the final whistle. The final- score was 5 – 5 to 0 – 8 in favour of the Shanes and well done to both teams on a sporting and skilful game. Next up for the minor girls is an away fixture against Clann Eireann on Thursday evening.

U16 Boys

The club hosted a very successful U12 Go Game blitz on Saturday which saw all the young camogs play a couple of great games against Ballymacnab and Mullaghbawn…well done everyone. Training will continue at the usual times during the week with the minor camas scheduled to play next Friday evening.

Weekly Fixtures
We have had several requests to publish the weekly fixtures, home and away, for all our teams - senior men, senior ladies, senior camogs, underage boys, underage girls and underage camogs.

On that basis could all managers please forward their weekly fixtures to Damien (Dee) Beattie either by PM via Facebook, email (deebt@hotmail.co.uk) or text (07733405769) no later than 7.00pm on a Sunday evening. Some of you may already have a list of all your fixtures – so you can send this to Dee. Dee will put together a list of fixtures (home and away) for the coming week for all age groups, in all codes which will then be published on our Facebook page.

This approach will make everyone aware of all weekly fixtures, home and away, and your co-operation would be greatly appreciated.

Special Presentation
Last week saw the club make a special presentation to local photographer Brendan Monaghan. Louise Kenny and Aimee Mackin, on behalf of our senior ladies, presented Brendan with a signed jersey in recognition of the fantastic coverage he afforded our senior ladies during their journey to last year’s All-Ireland final

Best Wishes
Best wishes to a good friend of the club Anthony Sloan who is currently recovering at home following a short spell in hospital.

Articles for Weekly Notes
Anyone who has anything for inclusion in the weekly club notes – match reports for all age groups (boys, girls, camogie), scores from matches etc -  please forward their article to Brendy Osborne (PRO), no later than 4.00pm on Sunday afternoons.

Cairde Sheáin Uí Néill
We are planning on increasing the membership of our Cairde Sheáin Uí Néill scheme over the coming weeks and months and following up with current members. Membership of the scheme costs only £10.00 per month and will contribute enormously to future development around the club. Thanks to the contribution of our current Cairde members we have been able to upgrade the playing surface of our main field and construct a new training area beside the clubhouse and concrete the driveway around the club. We still have plans to construct a new spectator area and other works around the club and we would like everyone associated with the club to be part of all future development and are encouraging people to become a Cairde Sheáin Uí Néill member. For further information on how to become a member of the scheme please contact Brendy Osborne on 07543806274.
