Listen to what Dr Sandra has to say…

The Southern Health and Social Care Trust has developed a series of infomercials to help people self-treat a range of very common minor conditions.

Produced with the help of the newly appointed Medical Manager, for the GP Out of Hours, Dr Sandra Elliott, the videos are part of a campaign to help reduce inappropriate use of the service.

Dr Sandra Elliott says “GP Out of Hours is only for patients with urgent care needs that cannot wait until their own GP surgery re-opens. However we receive a large volume of non-urgent calls every week, such as colds, hangovers, head lice, nappy rash, all of these conditions can be treated with self-care and over the counter remedies. I want to help people to better understand which service it is they need; it may be self-care, minor injuries or even the Emergency Department.

The series of short infomercials aims to remind people how to use the GP Out of Hours service and how to treat some common minor conditions in the comfort of their own home.

Dr Elliott adds: “The less non urgent calls we receive, the quicker we can respond to those with genuinely serious, urgent problems, so I urge people to please take a minute to think about which service you need. Remember, wait if you can, call if you can’t.”
