 Sinn Féin MEP Martina Anderson has called on the European Union to do more to assist the Basque peace process. 

Speaking at an event at the European Parliament in Brussels organised by the Basque Friendship Group, Ms Anderson said; 

"Ten years ago in October 2006 a declaration of support for the Basque resolution process was adopted by the European Parliament. 

"It called upon the European institutions to support the Basque peace process and play an active role in its resolution. 

"Ten years on that resolution remains in place. However, the EU has not done as much as it could to advance the peace process in line with the declaration passed by the parliament. 

"The Basque conflict is the last of its kind in the EU and there is an onus on the European institutions to play a role in helping to resolve it."
