Down Ladies Notes - 18th February 2018

Down Ladies County Board

The next County Board meeting will take place on Monday 12th March at 8 pm in the Thierafurth Inn, Kilcoo. Well done to Down Ladies secretary Moira Hawkins on picking up the Club person of the year at her home club, Castlewellan GAC! Very well deserved, as Moira works tirelessly for club and county!

Down Senior Ladies
The girls are continuing their preparation for their national league fixtures this week, with having two games. Match details will be published on social media.

U18/Minors - BORN 2000/2001 ONLY
The girls took on Louth in a challenge game before the Ulster championship starts. The girls were determined to keep the momentum going, a point down at the break they held the hosts to 2 points in the second half whilst scoring 3.09 in return ending the game winning 6.10 - 3.05. Next challenge game is this Sunday away to Wicklow - the game will be the curtain raiser to the Wicklow senior game v Antrim.

Down U16 – BORN 2002 ONLY
Down U16 ladies continued their championship preparation with a challenge game against Antrim today. Thankfully the weather was kinder this week with the rain holding off until the last 5mins. The girls are improving week on week which is giving the mentors some tough decisions to make over the next few weeks. Many thanks to Antrim for hosting the game at The Dub in Belfast. On Saturday 3rd March the u16 girls are holding a fundraising event by completing 'A Marathon of Toe Taps' - more details next week. All support and sponsorship greatly appreciated. Training continues Sunday 25th February 11 am-1 pm at Ballykinlar GAC.

Down U15 – BORN 2003 ONLY
The U15s continue preparation for the league with friendly games this Saturday. Details to be confirmed during the week via WhatsApp and social media.

Down U14 - BORN 2004 ONLY
Down U14 ladies travelled to Kilkerley Emmetts GAA Club in Louth to play two games against the neighbours from the wee county on Saturday. In the first game, Louth came out on top but there were some fantastic passages of play by the Mourne ladies to keep the game hanging in the balance to the very end. Captain for the first game was Una Fearon, Clonduff. In the second game, it was Down’s turn to get on top with some wonderful football played all over the park, moving the ball at speed to create excellent scoring opportunities.

Captain for the second game was Erin Byrne, Saval. Overall, the challenge was very beneficial to both sides, with everyone taking away plenty of positives from it, along with areas to focus on for improvement next day out. Many thanks to Louth Ladies for the hospitality after the games. The U14 squad received their tracksuit bottoms today as a result of recent fundraiser undertaken by the girls and also many thanks to McMahon & Co. Accountants and Plumbmaster (Haldane & Fisher) for their very generous donations to the team. Much appreciated McMahon & Co Accountants PlumbMaster.

Down U13 - BORN 2005 ONLY
Down U13 ladies played their first county match against Armagh today. The match was highly competitive throughout. All girls played with determination and true team spirit from throw in, to final whistle. This was a great learning experience for future matches. Thanks to Leo Smyth for refereeing and a big thank you to the parents who provided and served refreshments after the game. A special thanks to the staff and management of the Downshire Arms Hilltown for the very generous post-match dinner and hospitality provided to the team. Training continues on Saturday 24th February at 9 am – 10:45 am at St Malachy's High School Castlewellan.

Down U13 player Cait Rooney was dancing on Saturday in the Northern Ireland Championships. Cait dances for the McCartney School in Bryansford and got a 6th & 7th place medal. Well done Cait!
