Castlewellan GAC Notes 6th Mar 2017

On Saturday night past the club hosted the annual awards dinner. It was a night that celebrated the achievements both on and off the field of play. Guest speakers on the night were Jack Deveny from the County board committee and Armagh and Crossmaglen legend Oisin McConville.

Both men spoke highly of the club and the importance of the community and how they are the backbone to the successes of a wonderful club. Oisin also spoke about how as individuals we can achieve the targets we set, he touched on his own club and how their success for years at club level is and will always be of the hard work put in by the members, and how every member within the club is held with the highest of esteem no matter their role.

On the night 2 players picked up double awards across both codes as dual players, this highlighting how their talents are not going unmissed, Sean Hardy picked up Senior Hurler and U21 footballer of the year, while Aoife Keown picked up Camogie player of the year and Ladies football managers player of the year.

Elsewhere senior football player of the year went to Donal McKibben, 2nds player of the year Finbar Toner, Minor footballer of the year Gareth McKibben, contribution to minor football Ruairi Toner, and ladies footballer of the year going to the reliable Kathleen McCarten. On the night a special award was made to Sorcha McCartan for her achievments this year, another dual player Sorcha picked up a double collage all star with her school St Louis Grammar school Kilkell. She then went on to represent Ulster and was apart of the successful interprovincial team.

Off the field of play Donal Ward was named as club man of the year, this is an award that Donal  deserved, his dedication and consistent  application and support to the club throughout the year never went unnoticed.

Elsewhere a special presentation was made to Gerry Dougherty for 50 years service to the committee, this is an amazing achiement, and after 50 years Gerry still continues to bring the club forward in the best way possible.

Congratulations to all recipients on the night, and we hope for the same success in the year to come, on behalf of the committee we would like to wish all teams the very best for the season ahead.
