Border Communities Against Brexit

Government must do all in its power to avoid a hard border - Border Communities Against Brexit

Border Communities Against Brexit has called on Fianna Fáil to use all in its power to ensure that there is no hard border and the North’s remain vote is respected, following the Brexit vote.

Speaking after the Fianna Fáil “Brexit: Issues and Impact” Conference in the Carrickdale Hotel on Saturday, representatives from the group, Declan Fearon, Bernard Boyle and Dermot Keely who attended the conference said,

“This is the biggest issue facing our communities north and south, particularly in the border region and it is good to see Fianna Fáil organising a conference on it.

“The conference brought together industry experts, members of the public and political representatives to determine the key issues which must be addressed as border communities prepare for Brexit.

“We are made up of, and represent, ordinary people and if Brexit goes ahead it will be the ordinary people in our communities who will pay the price – therefore we welcomed the opportunity to attend the conference.

“Not to mention the impact on business, agriculture and tourism, Brexit would also result in a major setback in the progress made during the Peace Process. Ignoring the fact that people in the North voted to remain runs contrary to the commitments in the Good Friday Agreement regarding the right to self determination of the people of the North.

“Fianna Fáil has a big role to play. In context of the minority government they enjoy unprecedented power over government decisions and actions. Border Communities against Brexit is calling on Fianna Fáil to use this power to ensure that there is no hard border and the North’s remain vote is respected in  whatever form that is possible to do.”
