As part of the Breast Cancer Awareness Month the Southern Trust teamed up with Pretty ‘n’ Pink Breast Cancer Charity who are offering a unique bra recycling service for the province.
Staff and service users across the Southern Trust were encouraged to donate their unwanted bras to the ‘Bra Bank’ to highlight Breast Cancer Awareness Month 2016. The ‘Bra Bank’ scheme encourages women to donate their used bras for recycling, to help raise money for the Pretty ‘n’ Pink cancer charity.
Pretty ‘n’ Pink receive a donation of £700 per tonne of bras collected helping the charity provide vital funds for breast cancer patients and their families right here in Northern Ireland. Meanwhile, unwanted, unloved, uncherished bras will be given a brand new home by being shipped out and taking pride of place in the underwear drawer of a lady in a developing country, where bras are in short supply.
The drive has been spearheaded by the Trust's Breast Cancer Nurse Specialists who encouraged people to make a deposit in the Bra Bank, located outside the canteen in Craigavon Area Hospital. Fiona Reddick, Head of Cancer Services Southern Trust, said "This is a cause close to all of our hearts. Colleagues, services users, family and friends have been affected by breast cancer, so we want to do all we can to raise awareness and encourage women to be breast aware."
Breast cancer is now the most common cancer in the UK, with one in eight women being at risk. In the UK in 2008, almost 47,700 women were diagnosed with breast cancer, which is around 130 women a day.
