All-Ireland energy market must be protected - Boylan
All-Ireland co-operation on energy must be protected in the wake of Britain’s exit from the European Union, Sinn Féin MLA Cathal Boylan has said.

Chairing a major energy seminar in Belfast today, the Sinn Féin spokesperson for Energy, the Environment and Climate Change also warned Brexit poses a huge challenge to the energy market in Ireland.

“The electricity market here demonstrates the strengths that come from all-island structures," Cathal Boylan commented.

“We have an all-island electricity structure which operates in partnership with Britain.

“Any changes to the working of these structures can have enormous implications upon the supply and costs of energy which will ultimately hit consumers the hardest.

“Brexit will undermine energy production on this Island.

“Changes to any of these elements of the energy market has the potential to affect every single local household.

“A hard Brexit has the potential to create higher prices for everyone.

“We need to ensure that the current infrastructures are maintained and enhanced not fractured through Brexit.”
