 Communities Minister Paul Givan MLA has invited the Newry public to enjoy European Heritage Open Days (EHOD) on Saturday 10 and Sunday 11 September. 

History and culture will be brought to life with over 300 property openings and events.  A host of historic buildings will open their doors to the public, many for 10 and 11 September only.  This year's programme features a wide variety of special events such as walking tours, history re-enactments and film screenings.  With all events free of charge and many family friendly, everyone can take the opportunity to step back in time. 

Minister Givan said: "Organised by my Department, it is very apt that this year's theme across Europe is 'Heritage Communities'. Nurturing such communities is vital if we are to ensure that our heritage is well protected into the future and able to support community cohesion and a strong economy. 

Locations in the Newry area opening for the weekend include the Petty Sessions Coffee House and Moyry Castle in Carrickbroad.  The village Court House, now the aptly named "Petty Sessions Coffee House", is an appropriate setting for a collection of news items relating to a variety of 'petty' misdemeanours dealt with at the monthly Petty Sessions which were held in this building for over 100 years.  Staff will be on hand to give information regarding the history of the building and Petty Sessions Exhibition. Refreshments are available all day. 

Moyry Castle is set on a rocky height overlooking the strategically important Moyry Pass. The small tower, 3 storeys high has rounded corners, gun loops and a machicolation over the door. The Castle was built in 1601 to secure the pass to Mountjoy's northern campaign, but it had a short military life.  It is approached uphill under the railway bridge to the west.

Minister Givan concluded: "The weekend is going from strength to strength each year with over 52,000 people turning out last year. Whilst all events are free some require pre-booking. To avoid disappointment check out http://www.discovernorthernireland.com/ehod and @ehodni on Twitter now." 

1. This is the 19th year that Northern Ireland has joined forces with 50 other countries across Europe for the EHOD weekend.
