It's back to bacon for the best pool players in the Newry and District area after last Thursdays individuals. There wasn't much in the way of shocks in the 2nd round but I'm sure you are more concerned about how our predictions faired from our previous blog.
Last years winner and 3/1 shot Paddy Clarke sailed past dangerous potting Conor O'Hare 2-0. O'Hare never seems to find his best form against the top players but the favourite marches on.
Pat Brady is still in with a chance of making his 3rd Singles final in a row when he beat Alan Burke 2-0. Brady started out 4/1 and the other 4/1 shot Kieran McMahon was tested to the full by Paddy Tavey when the CWC A squeezed past his former team mate 2-1.
These were two exact scorelines we predicted in our blog.
In fact we got 15 exact scorelines. 23 results were correct out of 31 results and 8 results caught us out. Probably our biggest gamble that didn't pay off was going against bookies' hot favourite Cathal Phelan. We tipped Michael Feenan to beat his team mate 2-1. Phelan reversed that scoreline when he came from 1 down. Feenan was in a rich vein of form before Christmas and this game came while he's in a dip in form.
From our first 12 predictions we got 11 correct winners. Gareth McCann the 1st faller from our tips when he slipped to Kieran Cummins - from a division below him.
Sean Murray and Brendan Devlin were the only two to lose fellow Premier Division players from our predictions.
Garry Powell beat Murray. PJ McDanials denying his team mate Devlin.
Bernie Magee got stunned by Division 1 Colm Shields from Ballyholland 2-0. We predicted a tough tactical battle for Magee but we still thought Magee would edge it 2-1.
Jimmy McVerry got hammered by Cailim McParland. We new McVerry could struggle due to lack of table time and that's exactly how it turned out even though we expected McVerry to squeeze it 2-1.
Damien McArdle got stuffed 2-0. We said 2-1 to Diddles but the cautious tactical approach by Ballyholland hero Jim McMahon was just too much for the former Premier player Diddles.
Kevin Magee getting hammered 2-0 was arguably the surprise result of the night. Tom McGuinness is a good solid competitor but Magee was bang in form so his defeat to the Division 1 St. Monnina talisman came as a big shock.
We haven't heard back from Harvey Lavelle v Ralph Crummy which was a rearranged match.
CWC was our glory venue last Thursday. Not only did we pick all 4 correct winners we picked all 4 exact scorelines. A 2-0, 2-1, 2-0 and 2-0 gave us the perfect scores in that venue. Thank you Terry McNally, Brian O'Neill, Colly McCann and Eddie McCaughey.
Well done to all our competitors!
